Chapter Ten

Hannah’s heart thumped against her ribs, her throat dry, as she studied Wesley’s face. A range of emotions washed over it. Denial, confusion, concern. He rubbed the back of his neck, turning his gaze away.

“You’ve been injured,” he said gruffly. “You don’t know what you’re saying.”

Hannah glanced at the door. She’d been given a private room due to the nature of her injuries. An IV dripped beside her, the needle sticking into her hand. This wasn’t the place to tell Wesley about it, but it felt like, for the first time since Mark had arrived, her head was clear enough to talk. She knew she was being ridiculous, that she could talk about it just as well back at the ranch. It’d be safer, too, less chance of being overheard.

“This can’t wait,” she whispered. “Wesley, please. Even if you turn away from me after, I need to tell you now.”

“I won’t turn away from you.”

Hannah breathed shakily. Her hands trembled. She wanted to believe him so badly… She swallowed, then continued speaking. “I’m not sure what happened, but I broke through the magical block. I understand now why I had all those nightmares. I also understand why I blocked out my memories. And why the bone mound attacked me. I was right. It is Andrew in there.”

“The prison Noah Stokes is being held in isn’t far from here,” Wesley blurted, not looking at her. “While I’m here I’ll swing round and pay him a visit. If Mark was involved with Kent, then we can get more evidence against him. Lucker had Mort pick him up; he’s being held at the police station. But with Titan attacking us, the only thing they really can keep him on right now is trespassing and that’s not going to hold up for long.”

Tears dripped down her face. She grabbed Wesley’s hand. She understood what he was doing. He didn’t want to know, so he was changing the subject. Just like how in the past she would talk about his tight-fitting jeans.

This was hard enough to face. It was hard enough to come to the decision that she would tell him at all instead of holding it in. She was confessing to murder—not only one but half a dozen murders. It made her sick to her stomach to think about. Made her even sicker to admit.

“Wesley.”

He tensed.

“I need to tell you. You need to know.”

“I don’t—”

“You do. You have to know what sort of person you’ve sworn to protect.”

Wesley closed his eyes. Hannah could almost see the arguments lining up in his head. He’d be able to change her mind, she knew that. He knew that. They both knew that when it came down to the wire, he would be able to convince her to do anything. And not because he was smarter than she was—but because she trusted him.

After what felt like far too long, Wesley released a heavy breath. He nodded once.

Hannah gathered herself again, trying to sort through the necessary details and what to leave out.
